BPC-157
Overview
Body Protection Compound-157 is a synthetic peptide derived from a protective protein found in the stomach. It has shown remarkable healing properties for various tissues including tendons, ligaments, muscles, and the gastrointestinal tract.
Reported benefits
Accelerated wound healing, tendon and ligament repair, gut health improvement, reduced inflammation, neuroprotective effects
Mechanism of action
BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) is a synthetic pentadecapeptide derived from a protective protein found in gastric juice. It promotes healing through multiple mechanisms:
• Angiogenesis: Stimulates formation of new blood vessels via VEGF pathway, improving blood flow to injured tissues • Collagen Production: Enhances synthesis of type I collagen and fibroblast growth, accelerating tissue repair • Growth Factor Modulation: Upregulates growth hormone receptors and increases expression of multiple growth factors • Anti-Inflammatory: Reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α) while preserving beneficial inflammatory responses • Nitric Oxide Regulation: Modulates NO pathways to optimize healing without excess inflammation • Cytoprotection: Protects cells from oxidative stress and maintains mitochondrial function • Tissue-Specific Effects: Shows particular affinity for tendon, ligament, muscle, and gut tissue repair
Research & clinical studies
BPC-157 has been extensively studied in animal models with promising results:
**Musculoskeletal Research:** • Tendon Healing: Multiple rat studies show accelerated Achilles tendon, quadriceps, and rotator cuff healing (2-3x faster recovery) • Ligament Repair: Improved healing of medial collateral ligament injuries with enhanced biomechanical properties • Muscle Recovery: Reduced muscle damage and accelerated regeneration after injury or toxin exposure • Bone Healing: Enhanced fracture healing and reduced bone loss in animal models
**Gastrointestinal Research:** • Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Significant reduction in IBD symptoms and tissue damage in multiple studies • Ulcer Healing: Accelerated healing of gastric, duodenal, and esophageal ulcers • Leaky Gut: Improved intestinal barrier function and reduced permeability • Fistula Healing: Promising results in healing intestinal and anal fistulas
**Neuroprotection:** • Brain Injury: Reduced damage from traumatic brain injury and improved recovery • Peripheral Nerves: Enhanced peripheral nerve regeneration after injury • Stroke Protection: Neuroprotective effects in ischemic stroke models
**Cardiovascular:** • Blood Vessel Health: Improved endothelial function and vascular healing • Heart Protection: Cardioprotective effects against various toxins and injuries
**Current Status:** ⚠️ Human clinical trials are LIMITED. Most data comes from high-quality animal studies (rats, mice). No FDA approval for any indication. Used off-label in research and wellness communities.

FDA & legal status
BPC-157 is not currently FDA-approved for any indication. Effective April 22, 2026, the FDA removed BPC-157 from Category 2 of its Section 503A bulk drug substances list after the original nominators withdrew their nominations. This removal lifts the prior “significant safety risk” designation but does not place BPC-157 on the 503A Bulks List. Compounding pharmacies may prepare it with a valid physician prescription and pharmaceutical-grade API from an FDA-registered manufacturer. The FDA’s Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee (PCAC) is scheduled to review this substance at its July 23–24, 2026 public meeting. Removed from FDA Category 2 (Do Not Compound list) effective April 22, 2026. Selected for PCAC review Day 1 — July 23, 2026 (White Oak Campus, Silver Spring, MD). PCAC agenda: BPC-157, KPV, TB-500, MOTS-c. If PCAC votes favorably, moves to 503A Bulks List. NOT currently on 503A Bulks List — compounding still requires physician Rx and pharma-grade API.
